Which township is my Chicago home in?
Chicago is split into eight townships for property tax purposes. The Assessor describes the three open ones this way:
- Hyde Park Township: State Street on the west, Pershing Road on the north, the lakefront on the east and 138th Street on the south.
- Lake Township: Pershing Road on the north, State Street on the east, and the city limits on the south and west.
- Jefferson Township: roughly Western Avenue on the east, North Avenue on the south and Harlem Avenue on the west, with a northern edge mostly along Higgins and Devon that reaches Touhy in places.
If you are near a boundary, look up your property index number (PIN) on the Assessor’s website. The property record lists the township.
Why this matters if you just bought, or are about to
Chicago is not being reassessed in 2026. This year’s reassessment covers the south and west suburbs. Chicago owners can still appeal, and every Chicago township is on the 2026 appeal calendar.
A successful appeal can lower the assessed value used for the tax bills that arrive in 2027. If your property’s details do not change, that lower value generally stays in place until the next reassessment.
Recent buyers often have strong evidence. The Assessor asks owners to send recent closing statements or sale prices of similar homes with an appeal. You can also appeal if the record has wrong details, such as the square footage. Appraisals must meet USPAP standards.
An appeal does not replace your exemptions. If you live in the home, make sure the homeowner exemption is in place. See our guide to the Cook County homeowner exemption and our overview of exemptions and tax bills after you buy. If you are still shopping, our Chicago buying costs guide explains how property taxes fit into the budget.
What comes after the Assessor
The Cook County Board of Review is the second level of appeal. It opens each township after the Assessor finishes with it. In 2026, it has opened only two Chicago townships so far, Rogers Park and Lake View, and both windows have closed. The Board charges no fee to file. You can file online or in person at 118 N. Clark St.
Common questions
Do I need a lawyer to appeal my Chicago property taxes?
No. The Assessor says you do not need a lawyer, tax representative or appraiser to appeal a home’s assessed value. If someone files for you, the Assessor requires a notarized owner verification form.
Can I appeal if Chicago was not reassessed this year?
Yes. The Assessor states that Chicago is not being reassessed in 2026, but Chicago townships still get appeal windows. Use your township’s last file date on the Assessor calendar.
What if I miss the Assessor deadline?
You may still be able to appeal to the Board of Review when it opens your township. The Board has not yet posted 2026 dates for Hyde Park, Lake or Jefferson.
